The licences are free of charge for users. The provision of licences forms part of the DFG’s ‘Discipline-Specific Information Service’ funding programme. Applications for these must be submitted in conjunction with the FID project and relate to products for cutting-edge research that go beyond the basic services provided by libraries. ChemPortal therefore focuses on specialised subject databases.

For licensing reasons, access is open to researchers in the field of chemistry at publicly or partially publicly funded universities, research organisations and research-supporting institutions in Germany. A work email address is usually sufficient as proof of eligibility.

Licences for Science of Synthesis are issued for one year at a time and must be reactivated after six months. Once the licence has expired, it is possible to register again. Funding for the licences is currently in place until the end of 2028.

To be eligible for a licence via the FID Chemie, applicants must be affiliated with a publicly funded institution. The aim is to provide access to as many different organisations as possible. In the event of high demand, additional criteria may be applied to ensure a fair distribution of the available licences.

With a view to the next funding period, scheduled to begin in 2029, we would like to licence further databases, such as specialist crystallographic databases.
